Saskatchewan Dead Last in Economic Growth - Yet Another Reason Change is Needed!

Today's Statistics Canada report places Saskatchewan's economic growth for 2006 dead last among Canadian provinces. Meanwhile, all other Western Provinces outpaced the national average.

It's not like the people of Saskatchewan really NEED another reason to be reminded of the fact that change is needed at the provincial government level. However, today's release proves to be yet another indication that Calvert & Co. are holding our province back.

At a time when oil and gas revenues increased, we still failed to capitalize. I may sound like a broken record, but with Sasksatchewan's plethora of resources, this simply should not be happening.

Please Mr. Calvert, call a provincial election already. This province is in dire need of change before it is too late!

  • Did you bother to learn why it was low? Or do you think it was the government's fault?

  • It is why we need a change alright. with all the other problems the NDP have caused. It is time we all vote for Brad Wall and put Calvert and CO to sleep once and for all!!

  • Ok. But you don't make any sense. GDP was down becasue of cigar lake and potash, two VERY large contributors to our economy, so it really has nothing to do with the government.
I understand you don't like the NDP but it's like you're trying to link toilet paper to lung cancer.
This TILMA thing is making news, why don't you comment on that?

  • This means, in essence, that the only growth in Saskatchewan was in the health care and public service sectors. Essentially, the rest of the economy, the parts that create wealth, were in recession. Despite record uranium, oil and gas prices, and a robust harvest.

This is clearly unsustainable. Time to fire Calvert and his incompetent cronies, and move on towards the goal of growing the province.

  • A little bit of history for those political buff's out there 25 years ago today April 26, 1982 the Great Grant Divine won the election with 55 out of the 64 seats. No matter how mad people were and maybe still are at what the torys did, you have to admit that that was a amazing thing for a party other then the NDP to win an election. only twice since 1944 has the NDP been defeated. Fall 2007 will be the next time the NDP goes down in defeat.

  • There's certainly no denying the landslide in 82. It was an impressive win. I think if the Saskatchewan Party had not changed their name, they would not have as many seats.

How the hell could the Saskatchewan Party help those cyclical sectors?

I want to hear from you anon., how to grow the province. Seriously, I want to hear your suggestions.

  • I am the guy that put the comment about Grant Devine wining in 1982 on this day. I think there should be more exploration in the north. From what I hear we have as much oil or more than Alberta has in there oil sands. I also think we need to attract more major companys to invest more into these sectors. I belive we should keep all MAJOR crowns but change how they are managed and run. Does that answer the Question anonymous?

  • Ya, that's better.
So you know about BQI on the Amex then.
Go take a look my friend. You're the conservative, I hope you cashed in on this. Jeeze, I remember when it was canwest and .70.

  • yes I am conservative and proud of it!! I am not a member of the the federal torys though.

  • Calvert has no hope in hell of wining the next election. A new poll came out today giving the saskparty 55% compared to 29% for Calvert and CO. I can see Calvert right now crying after reading those poll numbers. There is no way in hell that the NDP can get more votes back to win again. this is the best that the saskparty has done in a poll for over a year now.

  • yeah, the numbers are impressive. That does answer the question. However, I think the priceof oil needs to go higher before anyone wants the oil sands.

  • The NDP is driven more by its desire to maintain power than its founding philosophy. The ethics of the party have dwindled over the years, and I think even Romanow has stopped renewing his membership. It is not that Calvert and company are bad people - I have talked with many NDP candidates over the past several years, and they are generally good and capable people. But the party has slowly slipped into the mud - and they now operate in a culture that is a strange blend of Jean Cretien’s arrogance meets Paul Martin’s manic desperation.
By way of example, I received a call two days ago from someone that works for Ron Harper (NDP candidate), wanting to know if they could count on my support again this election. She never said one word about what Calvert and Company intended to do for Saskatchewan. Instead, she spent all her time trying to frighten me by drawing connections between Brad Wall and Grant Divine, including suggestions of criminality. As I questioned her about the many tenuous assumptions her claims included, she became rude in a slightly manic sort of way. It just stunk of desperation.
Yes, it is time for a change. Not because I believe the conservatives have a better plan, but because the NDP is corrupted from all its time at the trough and cannot be rehabilitated while it forms government.
