Lautermilch Latest Not to Run
According to the CBC, Eldon Lautermilch is the latest NDP cabinet minister to announce that he will not be seeking re-election when Calvert decides to call the next provincial election.
Lautermilch, who dismissed Saskatchewan's out-migration problem by saying that when people leave the province, "there's more left for the rest of us," has stated family reasons for not running for re-election after over 20 years in the legislature. However, his decision is also part of a trend which has seen a number of NDP cabinet ministers opt not to run in the upcoming election. Many of these are seasoned veterans of the party who surely can sense defeat on the horizon and would rather bow out than occupy the opposition seats in the provincial legislature. As well, the more this trend continues the worse it looks for Calvert and company.

It just keeps getting better and better. When is the pool going up to guess when Atkinson pulls the pin?

I would guess she'll be next and maybe the only other one to announce that she won't run.

Too bad the Minister of Incompetence didn't resign earlier. We'd all be much better off.
Now if only the Minister of Patronage (Maynard Sonntag) would step aside as well and do the province a favour.
Still unbelievable is that the Minister of Pollution (aka John Nilson) is still running, but apparently intends to resign if the NDP are in opposition, forcing a costly bi-election.

well this does not surprise be one bit. It's looking worse everyday for Calvert. Not that long ago the people who live down highway 32 named it after Lautermilch.

Yes, I drove down "Lautermilch Way" on Wednesday. Absolutely brutal. In fact, the ambulance is unable to take patients to the regional hospital in Swift Current because it is not safe to drive on the highway. Patients must be taken to Medicine Hat, which costs the province unneccessary extra fees.

The sinking ship just gets more and more deserted.

"Also where did you hear that Nilson plans to run again?"
The 'rumour mill' has him quoted as saying that he will probably run again, but that if the NDP is defeated, he intends to resign, return to law practice (don't know how much of a practice MLT will have left after the NDP patronage is withdrawn) and force a bi-election.

Dean,
I misread your statement and thought it said that Sonntag has decided NOT to run again. I was so excited. Too bad.
