The Douglas Legacy: Just Imagine How Great Saskatchewan COULD Be

With Tommy Douglas Day coming up on October 20th, the NDP will surely attempt to capitalize on the supposed legacy of the NDP's Patron Saint of Socialism.

However, what they'll fail to reveal is the damage that Douglas has done to this province, the fact that him and his government actually advocated for eugenics in the province, that his medicare is, today, unsustainable, and that largely because of him the oil and gas reserves somehow stop right at the Alberta-Saskatchewan border (see photo).

Indeed, if it wasn't for Tommy Douglas, who fought off the oil industry and prevented drilling, Regina would have been the oil capital of Canada. Imagine what could have been?

If it wasn't for Douglas, we may have a health care system like that of most Western nations, such as Germany, France, and others. These systems ensure that patients are given care without having to pay for it yet have sustainable systems where wait times aren't atrociously long!

If it wasn't for Douglas, we might not have such a strong labour movement in the province, which discourages business investment and is breaking the health care system and other industries.

Before you buy into the propaganda that the NDP will undoubtedly spread this Saturday, please realize all that ails this province and where the roots lie. Please realize that Tommy Douglas wasn't the saint that the NDP make him out to be.

  • As a worker in both the oil & gas industry, it pains me everytime i look at this map. I have to travel to the "promised land" of alberta to work. however i am travelling ACROSS SOME OF THE MOST FERTILE OIL & GAS FIELDS IN WESTERN CANADA just to get there. Tommy Douglas fucked things up 40 years ago, and Calvert will continue to. If the NDP are so afraid of Alberta, why is it good enough for our kids to move there? Business creates more business which creates wealth which creates taxpayers. Do the math Lorne. THIS PROVINCE RIGHT NOW IS SUCCEEDING DISPITE OF YOUR NDP BULLSHIT! Go SP, and go to hell NDP

  • Amen. I also find it funny how the NDP and its union friends paint Alberta as this evil place but yet base their wish lists on what their counterparts in Alberta receive when it comes time to bargain for new contracts. Hypocrisy, as usual from the unions, which make up the equally hypocritical NDP.

  • Saskatory, i posted the previous note. Thanks for this medium and thanks for your work. I think finally the NDP and unions and all of their shit cannot just feed us their crap through the MSM. Places like this are where things can be shared, openly and freely, without some union craphole playign the fear card to old grey hairs.

  • When the TD or the government of Sask ever push for eugenics. TD wrote about it nearly 100 years ago and more then made up for his mistake over the course of his life.
But, if the NDP bringing up Devine is old news then this is completely offside or do you neo-cons like to have your cake and eat too.

Nice try, mq. However, Devine was the head of the Sask PCs, which is NOT the Sask Party (no matter how much you and your ideological soul mates try to kid yourselves into thinking that they are). If you think otherwise, check this link. They are totally different parties.

Of course, you'd be correct in pointing out that Douglas headed the provincial CCF, which was technically a different party than it's successor, the NDP. However, the Sask NDP always welcomed the campaign assistance of the good Mr Douglas (particularly in the 1978 election - I can still remember the NDP running TV ads featuring Tommy saying "Don't let them take [Medicare] away!"), so Tommy was happy to embrace the Sask NDP, and they were happy to embrace him. No such mutual admiration society, however, exists between Devine and the Sask Party.
